For a few short hours, it appeared the conflict in the Middle East could be resolved without further bloodshed. Unfortunately, that turned out not to be the case.

At 9am local time in Tel Aviv (2am EDT), Israel’s parliament voted to accept a cease-fire agreement proposed by Egypt. Hamas rejected it.

According to CNN;

The Israeli Security Cabinet met early Tuesday morning and reached a decision to halt aerial strikes beginning at 9 a.m. (2 a.m. ET).

The plan calls for all sides to cease hostilities in Gaza. It also calls for the opening of border crossings, once the security situation is stable, and for high-level talks among those involved. The response from Hamas’ military wing contradicted the one from its political wing.”We are still discussing and there is no official position yet from the movement on the Egyptian initiative,” Mousa Abumarzook, a senior member of Hamas, said on his official Facebook page. Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades, dismissed any talk of a cease-fire, saying its battle with “the enemy” will “increase in ferocity and intensity.” “We in the Al-Qassam Brigades reject altogether the proposal, which for us is not worth the ink that it was written with.”

Israel respected the cease fire and halted all military action against the Gaza strip immediately after its parliament agreed to the cease-fire.

Unfortunately, Hamas did not share Israel’s willingness to stop fighting, and continued to fire rockets at Israeli citizens, causing damage to a house in Ashdod. At 8:10am EST, the IDF twitter feed announced that Israeli forces would resume military action against Hamas because of the continual rocket fire.

While the cease fire may have seemed like a good idea, it is very clear that Hamas does not intend to lay down its weapons and begin walking the path to peace. As a result, Israel must once again go to war to defend its right to exist.
