World War II veteran Dennis Baca was drafted into the Army at 17 in 1941, before he got his high school diploma, and never went back to finish school. Now, after 73 years, he will get to walk across the stage with the other young people.
An 89-year-old World War II veteran will finally earn his diploma next week, after his education was stalled by the draft decades ago.
“When the war started I couldn’t finish high school,” he said.
Now he has nine children and 30 grandchildren to cheer him on when he receives it at a special Albuquerque Public Schools ceremony June 18.
