There is a great deal of political maneuvering with respect to the Sept 11, 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone S. Woods and Glen Doherty. There is also some amount of effort being spent to downplay Benghazi by saying it was just another embassy attack, like those that have happened in the past.
Benghazi is different, both in the outcome on the ground and the response by the administration in charge. In Benghazi, Chris Stevens was the first US Ambassador killed on duty since 1979. The administration responded by attempting to cast the attack as a protest, something that they knew to be false.
Prior administrations with presidents of both parties were forthright about the embassy attacks that happened on their watches. Whatever his other mistakes about the 1979 Iran embassy attack, for instance, President Carter was as honest as possible with the public. That didn’t happen this time.
