UPDATED: Marine Sentry Shot And Killed At Camp Lejeune Gate

According to officials at Camp Lejeune, a Marine sentry at the gate of the Marine base was shot and killed by a discharged weapon around 5:30pm and has been pronounced dead.  Officials at the base have said that he was shot when another Marine at the gate pulled out his weapon and shot him.  The shooter used his M4 rifle to kill the other guard.

Officials have said that they do not consider it to be connected to terrorism.

A release posted on Camp Lejeune’s official Facebook page stated broke the news of the shooting:

“At approximately 5:30 p.m., a Marine standing guard at Camp Lejeune’s Main Gate discharged an M4 rifle, killing another Marine guard.

Identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Base Provost Marshal has stated the incident is being considered neither as an act of terrorism nor an active shooter event at this time.

The incident is currently under investigation by Naval Criminal Investigative Service.”

The event occurred at 5:30pm when a discharged weapon at the gate fired and hit a Marine sentry standing at the main gate to Camp Lejeune.  It was not immediately known whether the event was an accident or whether the other Marine whose weapon it was did it on purpose.
