Vladimir Putin’s first tweet has been brought to the surface, and what it says is quite interesting, given the collapse of the US relationship with Putin. In his first ever tweet, he chose to congratulate President Barack Obama for his victory with a glowing statement of an improved relationship between the two nations.
Congratulations to US President-elect Barack Obama http://t.co/wi0upVQB

The irony of Vladimir Putin’s first tweet back in November of 2012 has a brand new meaning since the events that have unfolded in Ukraine and between the US-Russian relationship. There is no doubt that the relationship is at a near stand-still as both the Obama Administration and Putin have gone tit-for-tat over the past week. Earlier in the week, President Obama announced sanctions against a group of Russian and Crimean officials. The Russians laughed at the response, including a tweet by the deputy prime minister of Russia who referred to the president as Comrade Obama.
Today, the Obama Administration deepened those sanctions and broadened the recipients. The Russian’s responded by listing their own set of sanctions against American policy makers, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Speaker John Boehner, and Senators John McCain and Mary Landrieu. Senator McCain sent a sarcastic statement in response, saying, “I guess this means my spring break in Siberia is off, my Gazprom stock is lost, and my secret bank account in Moscow is frozen. Nonetheless, I will never cease my efforts on behalf of the freedom, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, including Crimea.”
Suffice it to say, this tweet, the very first one sent on the English personal twitter handle of Vladimir Putin, seems like an empty gesture or a sarcastic litany with the expectations of going back on the supposed sincerity of the letter. American relations with Russia continue to dwindle, and thanks to Twitter’s new tool that allows you to find the first tweet of any account, we are able to see just how far they have deteriorated or just how cold and calculating Putin just might be.
