Eight people were killed and at least 12 others were injured when a terrorist driving a white truck ran over a number of people and then struck a school bus in lower Manhattan, around 3:05 p.m. EST on Tuesday.
The attack comes days before the annual New York City marathon.
Various videos have emerged of the scene, as an NYPD officer tracked and apprehended the terrorist after shooting him.
Law enforcement sources identified the terrorist as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov. He came to the U.S. in 2010 from Uzbekistan.
A Bellevue Hospital source, where the terrorist is being treated and held, who wishes to remain anonymous, told American Military News – when asked what the terrorist looked like – that they have seen the terrorist up close, and the driver “definitely looks middle eastern.”
The terrorist rented the truck from a Home Depot in New Jersey and drove the truck to lower Manhattan, where he drove the truck the wrong way down a bike path and continued for roughly 20 blocks before the truck was stopped.
The terrorist then got out of the truck with a paintball gun and a BB gun before being shot by the NYPD.
In a press conference, NYC Mayor Bill Deblasio declared this as an intentional terrorist attack shortly after the FBI Joint Terror Task Force showed up to the scene.
The driver of a Home Depot rental truck struck more than a dozen people as he went on a rampage down a bike path near Houston and Chambers streets in lower Manhattan, near Ground Zero.
Law enforcement said the terrorist, who was carrying a BB gun and a paintball gun when he got out of the truck, shouted “Allahu Akbar” after getting out of the vehicle, Fox News reported.
The terrorist was identified as a 29-year-old male.
The individual was shot by the NYPD and is expected to survive. The driver was taken to Bellevue Hospital.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at the scene, and President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident.
One eyewitness told CBS News: “I saw a truck – a white pick-up truck – going down the bicycle lane and running people over.”
