Sky News Poll: Most British People Want Police To Be Armed

June 06, 2017

A large majority of Britons want police to be armed, according to a Sky Data poll.

According to the poll, roughly 72 percent of those surveyed said police should be regularly carrying firearms, while 20 percent opposed police routinely carrying firearms.

If those who answered “neither” or “don’t know” are excluded, the number of those in favor of arming police increases to 78 percent while 22 percent oppose.

The numbers were similar among categories such as age, gender and region.

Londoners were least in favor of police officers routinely carrying firearms; however, 68 percent were still in favor.

More than 90 percent of police officers in the United Kingdom are not armed.

The Sky News Poll was conducted following the recent London terrorist attack where three attackers mowed people down on the London Bridge and then stabbed people in a nearby market. Seven people were killed and 48 more were wounded during the attack.
