Pennsylvania Police Offer Free Gun Locks To Town’s Gun Owners

January 04, 2017

Free locks are being handed out to gun owners in Washington Township, located near Waynesboro, P.A.. On Tuesday, the police department said on their Facebook page that the purpose of the giveaway is to encourage safe handling and storage practices of firearms. Guns owners in the town are encouraged to visit the Washington Township Police Department to pick one up.

The locks are being offered to anyone in the community and are available for rifles, revolvers, shotguns and semi-automatic handguns. The locks, which were funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, will continue to be handed out until the supply is gone.

The department urges citizens to remember that any safety device or gun lock should not trump the importance of safe gun handling and storage. Gun locks are to be used as deterrents, but can also be broken through with enough diligence. It is always the safest option to store unloaded guns in a locked safe, making certain that ammunition is stored separately, and that combinations or keys to the safe are never easily accessible.

Officers also encourage parents to sit down and discuss gun safety with their children, like what to do should they encounter a gun. Parents are also encouraged to speak to the parents of their kids’ friends to make sure any guns kept in the home are safely stored away as sometimes guns can be confused for toys.

Residents can get a free gun lock, or locks, at the Washington Township Police Department located at 13013 Welty Road in Waynesboro, P.A..
