A Close Look At The Powerful And Deadly General Electric Seven-Barrel Anti-Tank Gatling-Type 30mm GAU-8/A Avenger Cannon
Created as a parallel program to the Attack Experimental competition, which produced the U.S. Air Force’s A-10 Thunderbolt II, the General Electric GAU-8/A Avenger is a 30mm hydraulically driven seven-barrel Gatling-type cannon designed specifically for an anti-tank role. Thanks to its very powerful delivery of rounds at a high rate of fire it is also used in the Goalkeeper CIWS ship weapon system, which defends against short-range threats such as highly maneuverable missiles, aircraft, and fast maneuvering surface vessels.

Designed in the 70’s with specifications to be the main gun for the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II Warthog, the gun is loaded using Syn-Tech’s linked tube carrier GFU-8/E 30mm Ammunition Loading Assembly cart, a vehicle unique to the A-10 and the GAU-8. In service since 1977 along with the iconic ground attack aircraft, it is combat proven and has served the U.S. military extremely well.
