Watch The USS Jackson Conduct Full Ship Shock Trials With An Explosion
Watch this awesome video of the USS Jackson conducting Full Ship Shock Trials (FSST) off the coast of Florida on July 16.
The purpose of the shock trials is to to validate the operational survivability of new construction ships after becoming exposed to underwater shock.
The ship’s third and final test was conducted with a 10,000 pound explosive charge. During the FSST there was increased seismic activity, but the ship sustained minimal damage and was able to return to port on its own power.
Prior to testing, the Navy establishes an exclusion zone so that other vessels are not nearby when the test is being conducted. Additionally, tests are conducted so that there is no damage to marine life or migration patterns.
