The New York Air National Guard’s 109th Airlift Wing’s mission is to provide airlift support to the National Science Foundation’s South Pole research program by flying LC-130H Hercules air-lifters, fitted with special wheel-ski gear, in support of Arctic and Antarctic operations. The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medevac, and cargo transport aircraft.
