Conceal Carry Holder Gets Shot At, Decides Not To Shoot Back To Save Child’s Life

August 19, 2016

A legally armed gun owner made a last-second decision not to fire back at a man who was shooting at him, in order to save the life of a child nearby.

Shortly before 10:30 am last Thursday at an Evansville, Indiana shopping center parking lot, Kiyel Langley and his girlfriend, Amber Martin met up with Martin’s ex boyfriend. Martin and her ex-boyfriend have a child together.

Quickly after meeting up, an argument turned to violence. The ex-boyfriend, who did not want to be identified, called his father to pick him up. When the ex-boyfriend’s father pulled up, Langley and Martin pulled up behind them to continue the fight.

Langley then pulled out a revolver and started shooting at the ex-boyfriend. The ex-boyfriend, who was legally armed, chose not to fire back at Langley because his child was in the back of the car that Langley and Martin were driving in.

“[Langley] fired the last shot as I was dialing 911. That’s when he took off running,” the ex-boyfriend told local media. Langley ran on foot down the alleyway while Martin drove the car away.

Officers then arrived on scene and arrested both Langley and Martin a short time later after being given a detailed description by the ex-boyfriend and eye witnesses at the scene.

The ex-boyfriend, who is a legal gun owner with a valid license to conceal carry, had a semi-automatic at the time of the altercation.

Police praised the ex-boyfriend for showing restraint despite being shot at.

“It does appear that he used a lot of good, common sense and wisdom by choosing not to fire,” said Evansville Police Captain Andy Chandler. “Even after the shots were fired and the suspect took off running, the [victim] that had a legal carry permit once again chose not to fire at the suspect because he felt like he was no longer in danger because the suspect was running from the scene.”

Langley was charged with attempted murder, while Martin is facing charges for assisting a criminal.
