Matt Damon Supports Lena Dunham’s Guns-On-Posters Protest While He’s Holding A Gun In Every Ad

July 22, 2016

Only a few short weeks after Matt Damon said he wished America had more gun control similar to that of Australia, Damon is taking a lot of heat for promoting a movie on a poster that shows his portrayed character, Jason Bourne, wielding a gun. Matt Damon is for tough gun control, but when it comes to promoting his own movie, he shies away.

A few days ago, Damon expressed support for Lena Dunham’s guns-on-posters protest that urges people to vandalize the posters and remove the gun from the picture. Damon said he understand’s why people are upset with guns and why they don’t want to see them on posters.

“I totally get it. I mean especially given what’s going on recently, and I get not wanting to see a picture of a gun right now, and I don’t blame her at all,” Damon said in an interview with Maria Menounos on E! News. “I mean for the marketing purposes of Jason Bourne—I mean he is a guy who runs around with a gun, so it’s not gratuitous marketing, but certainly in light of recent events I understand that impulse to want to tear the gun out of the picture.”

Damon’s film, “Jason Bourne,” which hits theaters on July 29, has subway ads that show him holding and pointing a gun. “Girls” producer, Tami Sagher made a post on Instagram with the gun cut out of the poster.

“Hey New Yorkers, what if we do some peeling & get rid of the guns in the Jason Bourne subway ads. So tired of guns,” the caption for Sagher’s post reads.

A few weeks ago, Damon promoted gun control by saying that the United States should follow Australia’s lead which introduced strict gun control measures in 1996.

“You guys did it here in one fell swoop and I wish that could happen in my country, but it’s such a personal issue for people that we cannot talk about it sensibly. We just can’t,” Damon told media Down Under.
