Russia Details Plan To Place Cosmonauts On Permanent Lunar Base
Russia has announced its detailed plan to place 12 Russian cosmonauts on a base on the moon.
The Russian equivalent of NASA, space agency RosCosmos has announced their detailed plan that they have spent years working on.
A dozen cosmonauts will live on the base at one point.
“At the initial stage, the Moon base will be manned by no more than 2-4 people, with their number later rising to 10-12 people,” Olga Zharova from the Central Research Institute of Machine Building told Izvestia.
The project was initiated during the 1960’s and 1970’s. The base will be set up on the Moon’s surface with radiation protection shelters and energy units hidden underground.
The location for the base has not been chosen but it will likely be built near one of the moon’s poles with a power station and a fallout shelter built underneath. Colonization will begin with identifying the perfect location for manned and cargo spaceships could land safely, a spokeswoman said.
