Gay Activists Post Iwo Jima Photo That Sparked A Firestorm
In the early 2000s photographer Ed Freeman shot a photograph of shirtless gay men raising the gay pride flag a la the soldiers at Iwo Jima. The photo was shot for a magazine and had been dormant for some time…until now.

A fake Jennifer Aniston Facebook account posted the image with the following caption:
Now… I have nothing against people who are into same sex partnerships. However what I do have a problem with is this F**KING picture. How dare you compare your political struggle to what the Marines & Navy Corpsman went through on Iwo Jima. I get the whole meaning of you winning the “Uphill Battle” but this is tasteless, offensive, and disrespectful to those who gave their lives on that hill. You should be ashamed of yourselves for being hypocritical of those you claim offend your flag.”
This launched a firestorm across the internet. Threats of boycotts as well as messages of support and opposition. All of which made more bizarre by the fact that it was a FAKE account!
None of this however changes how offensive the image is. Wherever you stand on the issue of gay marriage is irrelevant. What happened on Iwo Jima was a sacred moment, symbolizing lives lost and great sacrifices for freedom. Disparaging that in anyway is beyond the pale.
Vets of Iwo Jima once said that they “entered the gates of hell.” This should NEVER be minimized and any attempt to gloss over it will never be looked upon favorably here.
